Cookie policy

This website site, like many others, uses small files called cookies to help us to understand how visitors use the site, and to provide our visitors with a good user experience. Find out more about cookies and how you can control them.

What are cookies?

'Cookies' are small text files that are stored by the browser (for example, Internet Explorer, Chrome or Safari) on your computer, tablet or mobile phone. They allow websites to store things like user preferences. You can think of cookies as providing a 'memory' for the website, so that it can recognise you when you come back and respond appropriately.

How does this website use cookies?

This website uses two types of cookie:

  1. Site performance cookies
  2. Anonymous analytics cookies

Site performance cookies

This type of cookie remembers your preferences for tools found on the website. This site sets one cookie of this type:

  • has-js - this cookie is used to indicate whether or not your browser has javascript enabled. Javascript is used to animate certain parts of the website, for example the slideshow on the home page, and the cookie information popup.

Anonymous analytics cookies

We use Google Analytics to analyse the traffic to this website. Every time someone visits the site, Google generates 'anonymous analytics cookies'. These cookies can tell us whether or not you have visited the site before. Your browser will tell us if you have these cookies and, if you don't, we generate new ones. This allows us to gather statistics about the number of visitors we have, how often they visit the site, and which pages are most popular. These cookies are anonymous, which means that they cannot be used to identify you. The analytics cookies that we set are:

  • __utma - The Visitor Identifier. This cookie defines a visitor to the site.
  • __utmb - 30 Minute session identifier. This is a session identifier. This cookie expires after 30 minutes of inactivity. When it expires, Google deems that your visit to the website has ended.
  • __utmc - On Exit session identifier. This is another session identifier that expires when you close the browser. Again, Google uses the expiry to note that your visit to the website has ended.
  • __utmz - Visitor segmentation. This cookie contains all of the statistical data that is gathered and analysed, such as the visitor's country, browser language and version, the type of device used to access the site, and any search engine keywords that might have brought the visitor to the site.

Opting out of Google Analytics

Even though the data gathered by Google Analytics is anonymous and cannot be used to identify you, you can if you wish opt out of all Google Analytics tracking on all websites by installing Google's Opt-Out browser plugin, which you can find here. For even greater control over your browsing privacy you can install a privacy tool such as Ghostery.

Disabling cookies

It is possible to disable cookies for all websites or for selected individual websites. All modern browsers allow you to do this by changing your cookie settings. You can usually find these settings in the 'options' or 'preferences' menu of your browser. To understand these settings, the following links may be helpful, or you can use the 'Help' option in your browser for more details.
